Are you feeling anxious, depressed, having a hard time remembering things, feeling irritable and overwhelmed, can’t lose weight, tired and have difficulty concentrating and staying focused?
It could be coming from your mouth!
Did you know most metals used in the mouth are NOT biocompatible? Per the FDA, metals used in the mouth only need to pass a level that is appropriate for OUTSIDE the body, because technically the mouth and lumen (inner surface) of the GI system are considered to be “outside” the body! As you may guess, whether or not our gut is “outside” of our body is a context dependent technical distinction in the world of biology.
These metals can release ions and challenge the immune system causing hypersensitivities, allergies and have been linked to autoimmune disease. Furthermore, amalgam fillings used for dental restorations contain mercury, a known neurotoxin associated with ADD, ADHD, autism, Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, ALS as well as depression, insomnia, irritability, mental instability and anxiety.
Besides amalgam fillings, in some types of crowns and bridges known as “porcelain fused to metal” there is also metal. The main metals in those restorations are: chromium, cobalt and nickel, which are all heavy metals, similar to mercury.
In addition, there is a phenomenon called “oral galvanism” which is also associated with health risks.
In the presence of electrolyte-rich saliva, a battery-like effect between two or more metal dental restorations causes an electric current known as oral galvanism. This can lead to various sensations such as metallic or salty taste, burning or tingling of the tongue, increased salivary flow, visible changes in oral mucosa, such as redness and inflammation, nerve shock when touching teeth with metal utensils, and generalized discomfort in the mouth including trigeminal neuralgia, which causes regional facial pain.
There are also systemic ailments which are known to arise from metal toxicity such as pathological changes in the blood, kidneys, poor digestion and weight problems. Other systemic affects may be headaches, chronic fatigue, memory loss, and sleep disturbances due to the impact upon central nervous system. There is also evidence that oral galvanic currents release metal ions leading to build up of corrosive products and systemic heavy metal toxicity.
I am not trying to scare you, but I do think that you deserve to be fully informed. There is controversy within the scientific and dental communities as to what extent dental metals cause these symptoms and health effects. But do you want to have ANY of these effects at all? There is significant clinical evidence, extrapolations can be very reasonably made from related generally accepted scientific knowledge of the biological effects of metals, and many dental professionals strongly advise both avoiding and removing metals for these reasons.
At your next hygiene wellness visit - let’s make sure we identify all metal in your mouth and make a plan to get you to ultimate state of health and wellbeing!
Also, if you have a friend or loved one who has these symptoms - invite them to our practice to personality meet with me, Dr. Elona for a FREE consultation to see if metals are present in their mouth and what can be done to get it removed and replaced with biocompatible restorative options.
